COSMOCAIXA - former Science Museum
Cosmocaixa was originally known as the Science Museum. The aim of this extensive experimental collection is to explain the natural history phenomena and relationships. The layout of the museum is oriented to a fun-fulfilled learning of scientific processes through games and small experiments.
The museum was open to public in September 2004 and was designed by the architects Esteve and Robert Terradas. The project has adapted the museum to its surroundings with a modernist construction of 9 floors, 6 of them subterranean. The museum offers a multidisciplinary insight into all the most important aspects of scientific achievements and theories.
The museum’s main area is the Matter Room, a permanent exposition that occupies aprox 3500 sqm and offers an insight into the history of the matter, starting from the Big Bang until today. Many other rooms are dedicated to temporary exibitions or are used for different organized educational acitivities or conferences.
AREAS OF THE MUSEUM The Geological Wall A unique installation, with seven spectacular cuts in a 90 tonne rock especially selected for the museum. This will allow you to discover the most important geological processes that gave form to our planet. The Matter Room Any part of reality can be explained from a scientific point of view. From this perspective, the museum offers you to learn something more about the history of the matter, all the way back to the Big Bang.
