The Barcelona zoo has more than 100 years of history. It’s a must for locals and for tourists who visit the city and offers you a visit through the wild and exotic animal world. It is also a place dedicated to research and conservation, and collaborates on several international and European programmes for breeding and preserving species in extinction. The Zoo organizes different educational activities, especially orientated towards a younger audience. The Zoo opened for public for the first time back in 1892, based on a private animal collection of Lluís Martí i Codolar. Nowadays the Zoo contains more than 400 species (around 7500 individuals) distributed on a surface of more than 12 hectars.
There is an extensive collection of primates, all in danger of extinction, like orangutans and tamarins, the smallest monkey species in the world. Moreover, the zoo’s offer includes collections of big cats and mammals, a terrarium with around 500 amphibians and reptiles from all over the world, considered one of the best in Europe, a group of bottlenose dolphins which give spectacular daily performances etc. There are also some domestic and farm animals, like the Catalan donkey, an autochthonous race that has been on the verge of extiction in the past. Snowflake (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) was undoubtely a star attraction of the Zoo. He was the only albino gorilla known to exist, and was found in 1966 in Ecuatorial Guinea. He lived with 4 females, all black, and they had many offspring, 5 of which (a male and 4 females) have survived. Right now there is spectacular male gorilla of more than 200 kg living in the former Snowflake’s residency.
Various activities are organized for children and adults (courses and workshops), through which the visitors can learn to understand, respect and love animals. The Zoo area has restaurants, chidren play area, picnic area and all the services needed for a fulfilled and entertaining day.
