BARCELONA TRAIN

Barcelona is provided with good train connections to both rest of Spain and other europen countries (via France, Italy or Switzerland). Two main stations are called Sants and França. Sants services destinations in Spain and a few international trains, while most long distance trains depart from Estació França.

The national train network is called RENFE (Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles).

The high speed train (AVE) between Barcelona and Madrid has been recently inaugurated and it connects the two cities in a record time of 2h and 38min.

SANTS STATION

It’s the city’s main train station, situated in its southern part. It covers most of the national arrivals, including the Euromed and AVE, and all the local trains (“cercanias” or “rodalies”).

Moreover, this station is directly connected to the Barcelona (El Prat) airport with a special line. The Sants station is the central point of the Barcelona railway. Inside the station there is a secure 24h luggage storage service. The small lockers can hold items such as hand luggage and cost 3 euros. The large lockers for suitcases and backpacks cost 4.50 euros. The station is also provided with customer service points, restaurants, bars, bank machines and many shops.

FRANÇA STATION

The França train station was first built in 1929 in occasion of the 1929 World Expo and is considered the city's most beautiful station, containing marble, bronze and crystal decorations. The authors of that work were the architects Pedro de Muguruza and Raimón Duran and the engineer Andreu Montaner Serra.

The building has a huge “vestibul” opening towards the platforms area with large arcs. A beautiful work of art worth visiting during your stay in Barcelona.

There is a Mirror Hall at the station, where the reception during the World Expo was held. At present the old terminal is used for conferencies and expositions only.

The rest of the stations - Passeig de Gracia, Plaça Catalunya, Sant Andreu Comtal, Sant Andreu Arenal, Clot-Aragó and Arc de Trionf – are only serviced by local “cercanias” trains.

The train is an ideal mean of transport for daily trips around Catalunya. You can reach Sitges, Blanes, Arenys or any other close town with a pleasant train ride. The tickets are bought at the station and it’s not necessary to purchase them previously. However, if you are planning a trip to any other spanish city or out of the country, make sure you reserve your ticket on time.
