MACBA is the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona. It was designed by the architect Richard Meier whose rationalism and modernism-based work is especially inspired by Corbusier. He combines straight lines and curves, giving a major importance to the exterior light inside the interior spaces. It is located in the heart of Raval quarter and is considered a work of art. The museum’s history starts back in 1959 when the art critic Alexandre Cirici Pellicer defends the idea of creating a contemporary art museum in Barcelona. Along with Cesareo Rodriguez Aguilera he forms a group to start an art collection for the museum. It won’t be til 1985 that Joan Rigol from the culture department of the City Council brings it up again as an idea worth considering. Finally the Contemprary Art Museum Foundation is constructed in 1987, along with the creation of the Contemporary Art Museum Consortium integrated by the local government and as a result the new Museum is created in the April of 1988. The MACBA was officialy opened to public on November 28, 1995. MACBA is aiming to offer a critical overview of the art from the second half of the 20th century, through its permanent collection, temporary exibitions, public events, seminars and workshops for students. In 2006, the chapel of the Convent dels Angels has been incorporated as part of the museum, as an exibition room, creating an interesting combination of modern comtemporary style with an ancient historical building.
